Why a tooth infection should not be watched indefinitely

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that can develop inside a tooth or in the tissues around it. It may begin after deep decay, a crack, trauma, or gum disease. The pressure can cause throbbing pain, tenderness when biting, swelling, a bad taste, or a pimple-like bump on the gum.

Pain is not a reliable measure of whether the infection is gone. Sometimes the pain eases when an abscess drains or when the nerve inside the tooth stops responding. The source can still remain and continue damaging nearby tissue or spreading beyond the tooth.

Symptoms that need urgent dental assessment

  • Fever or feeling generally unwell along with tooth symptoms
  • Swelling of the gum, jaw, cheek, or face
  • Severe, persistent, or throbbing tooth pain
  • Pain when biting, drainage, or a gum bump that looks like a pimple
  • Difficulty opening your mouth or worsening symptoms

These symptoms do not let me diagnose the cause remotely, but they are reasons not to delay an examination. Do not rely on any single office as your only urgent-care path. If we cannot assess you promptly, contact another dentist or endodontist, an urgent dental service, or an emergency department as the symptoms require.

What treatment may involve

The priority is to identify and treat the source. Depending on the diagnosis, that may involve draining the infection, root canal treatment, periodontal treatment, or removing a tooth that cannot be saved. For many localized dental infections in otherwise healthy adults, definitive dental treatment is more important than antibiotics alone.

A clinician may prescribe antibiotics when there are signs of systemic involvement or other clinical reasons. Antibiotics do not repair the infected tooth, and they should not be started, stopped, or shared without professional direction.

What you can do while arranging care

  • Use over-the-counter pain medicine only as directed on its label and when it is safe with your health history and other medicines.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water and keep the area as clean as comfort allows.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the face for swelling.
  • Do not put aspirin directly on the tooth or gum; it can injure the tissue.
  • Do not delay emergency medical care when breathing, swallowing, or rapidly spreading swelling is involved.
