About Composite Fillings

A composite filling is a tooth-coloured resin bonded into the prepared cavity and hardened with a curing light. Because it bonds to the tooth, less healthy structure generally needs removing than older filling materials required.

What the appointment involves

Most fillings are completed in a single visit. The area is numbed, decay is removed, the tooth is conditioned, and the composite is placed in layers and cured. The bite is then adjusted and the surface polished.

Sensitivity afterwards

Mild sensitivity to cold for a few days is common, particularly with deeper fillings. Sensitivity that worsens over a week or two, or pain on biting, is worth contacting us about, as it often needs only a small bite adjustment.

When a crown may be recommended instead

A filling relies on the surrounding tooth for support. Where very little natural structure remains, or a crack is present, a crown may protect the tooth more predictably. We will explain what your examination shows.
