About Gum Grafting

When gum tissue recedes, the root surface underneath becomes exposed. Root surface is softer than enamel, decays more readily, and is often sensitive to cold. Whether grafting is recommended depends on how much recession is present and whether it is progressing.

Why gums recede

Recession usually has more than one contributing factor, and identifying them matters because treating the graft without addressing the cause invites the same problem again.

  • Brushing too firmly, or with a hard-bristled brush
  • Gum disease that has affected the supporting tissue
  • Grinding and clenching forces
  • Naturally thin gum tissue
  • Teeth positioned outside the arch of the jaw

What grafting involves

A graft places tissue over the exposed root, taken either from the roof of your mouth or from a processed donor source. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic, and our team will provide written aftercare guidance.

When monitoring may be recommended instead

Mild recession that has been stable for years and causes no sensitivity or decay is often best monitored at routine visits. We will explain which category your recession falls into and why.
